Classifying Benign and Malignant Lumps

Classifying Benign and Malignant Lumps

Classifying Benign and Malignant Lumps
By Paula J Jimenez

The capability to identify a lump will be a big help particularly to people who are not scientifically or medically knowledgeable about it. There are a few types of the same and are classified depending on size, growth and its effect on the body.

Define Lump
A lump is a localized area of swelling that may come about just about anywhere on the body. Physicians usually call it bump, nodule, contusion, tumor or a cyst.

What causes lumps?
Lumps may appear due to infections, inflammation, tumors or traumas.

Types of Lumps
These can be categorized to three: There are actually lymph nodes and glands, benign lumps and the cancerous ones which are known as malignant lumps.

In the following paragraphs, we're going to focus on benign and malignant lumps and talk about the classification and treatments for the both of them.

Classifying a benign lump
Best alternative cancer treatment centers have described some of the types of benign lumps as follows:

Nodules - Actually this is a very general term for a cancerous or a non-cancerous lump. Usually doctors describe the same as a nodule until they've identified what kind of lump it is.

Cysts - These are fluid-filled sacs of tissue that show up as lumps, this can also appear in every part of the body. Great thing here is that cysts usually go away by themselves.

Lipomas - A lipoma is a benign lump that consists of fats. These are non-cancerous lumps but could be surgically removed according to its location and size.

Treatments for benign lumps
Basically, benign lumps need no treatments. Yet, in some cases patients may require the same, it can be because of the appearance or it's just bugging them. Specialists on lumps may just keep a watchful waiting to make sure that it won't cause critical problems on patients. But again, a treatment or surgery can be executed if serious symptoms occur. Medications and radiation can be the two main treatments to carry out when a patient has a benign tumor.

Classifying a malignant lump
These are distressing kinds of lump or in general called as tumors. Malignant lumps are ambitious basically; for the reason that they've got few goals. First is to survive and second is to conquer; these tumors work double time to make sure that they can conquer and impact the body. They grow even quicker than a benign tumor; they usually are not moving but are spreading.

Treatments for malignant lumps
Some cancer treatment centers found these tumors clearly just like that of a skin cancer, but not all of those can be seen during exams and tests because they might be hiding deep inside the patient's body. A biopsy can be performed to make sure that the lumps that a patient has in their body are dangerous or not. A CT and MRI scans can be carried out to see the actual location of the tumor and to determine how far it has spread. Other kinds of tests required are blood test, bone marrow biopsy, x-ray and CBC.

When should you make an action about your lump?
Your instant action is needed to ensure your lump is not dangerous. Don't wait for many symptoms to occur prior to getting an appointment. Prevention surpasses cure and many cancer patients have saved their lives by detecting their lumps earlier than ever. Additionally, making sure that you are living and practicing a healthy lifestyle is necessary to help yourself prevent any possible disease.

Cancer Prevention Diets

Cancer Prevention Diets

Cancer Prevention Diets
By Bob G Johnson

General Dietary Considerations To Prevent Cancers:

1. Eat less total fat and eat the right fats - Approximately 20% or less of your total caloric intake should consist of fats. Look at package labels to make sure the item chosen has less than 20% total fats.

Eat the right fats as the Eskimos do and those in the Mediterranean region. This consideration based upon smaller incidence of cancers in the general population and observation of their diets.

2. Eat less so you stay lean and are not obese. Obesity tends to increase the % of people contracting cancer. Don't overeat anything. Consume moderately and if still hungry space your servings through the day, not at one seating.

3. If a beer drinker then consume less if tend to drink heavily. There does appear to be associated with colorectal cancer due to nitrosamines being a pre-cursor and nitrosamines found in beers.

Jury out on red wines when the quantity PER SEATING exceeds 3, 4 oz. glasses per seating. This is difficult to understand as most warnings on alcohol consumption seem to imply a single "daily consumption" measurement and that single measurement appears to be contradicted by the actual regions who have less cancer. In some cultures, specifically Mediterranean, the daily consumption is greater than what is supposedly carcinogenic, however the amounts consumed are not consumed in one setting. Mediterranean cultures may consume twice the daily consumption that is "dangerous" however it is consumed over a 8 - 11 hour time period. The lunch meal may include 2-3 glasses of wine, as will the night time meal. The spacing between consumption actually may contribute to overall cancer prevention by the alcohol, specifically the phytonutrients found under and in the grape skin.

Most studies do indicate consumption of more than 8 ozs. in one seating, over 1- 3 hours period may be detrimental.

4. Eat a colorful selection of foods, specifically vegetables and fruits. Vegetables per se aren't the best dietary habits. French fries fried in heavy fats, with mashed potatoes covered in gravy, as your "2 veggies" is not the answer. Rather eat colorful foods such as carrots for orange, beets for red, broccoli for green, corn for yellow, or Swiss chard for all of them!! The key is making sure your plate is loaded with color. Colors in veggies denotes differing chemical compounds of which the body can select those it needs and discard those not needed. This natural selection of nutrients is only possible if you are eating the correct foods enabling the selection.

How To Avoid Cancer By Using a Little Common Sense

How To Avoid Cancer By Using a Little Common Sense

How To Avoid Cancer By Using a Little Common Sense
By Alan Wighton

Our doctors are taught that cancer is a foreign lump and will spread if they don't remove it quickly. Unfortunately this information is not true or it's misleading and the growth itself is not the problem because with cancer it's the entire body where the problem is. Also people are dying from the treatments themselves and not the cancer so the best strategy is to practice prevention by making some subtle changes to the way you live now.

The reason why there is so much cancer now is because we are all kept ignorant about the many factors that are known to cause it. Our modern way of living with our artificial food and sedentary lifestyle are known contributors to the problem. If we had an efficient and caring health care system which had patient's interests foremost, there would be less people succumbing to the disease. Unfortunately today we only have a medical care system that is profit driven and not a health care system.

While cancer has many causes the food we eat daily is almost certainly the main reason why it will appear. The way to live without the fear of it is to remove the many foods that are causing the problem. Because of information we receive via the television and our newspapers we believe that fate or bad luck dictates whether we get cancer. The facts are that cancer is seldom causes by bad genes or factors that are outside our control but is nearly always caused by the way we are now living.

There are many faults with the typical western diet which is now becoming established in developing countries as well, because it contains large amounts of refined sugar, salt and the wrong types of fat. Also these days nearly everyone in Western developed countries where the cancer rate is highest is shopping in supermarkets where most of their products are processed. Also most of our food now has had chemicals added to it or it's been heated during processing so has lost its nutritional value.

Cancer no matter where it appears is always a disease of the entire body and removing growths with toxic therapies is mostly a pointless exercise. That's why our current way of treating the disease seldom works. Cancer is simply a disease of a weak immune system so your focus has to be to look after this important self repair system and the only way to do that is with a more natural lifestyle. The way to boost your immune system is to eat plenty of food in it natural state, exercise regularly and be wary of the many products we use that contain chemicals that are harming us.

There is a simple solution to cancer but it won't be offered because the people in charge of the cancer industry keep us ignorant so we submit to their expensive treatments. While conventional doctors are experts with these treatments of surgery, radiation and chemotherapy which of course is the only way they are taught at medical school but unfortunately just removing cancerous growths seldom cures the problem.

Man does not have the answers to cancer but Mother Nature does both with its prevention and its cure.

Using Indoor Plants to Prevent Cancer

Using Indoor Plants to Prevent Cancer

Using Indoor Plants to Prevent Cancer
By Sylvan Cruickshank

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, indoor air is ranked 4th in environmental causes of cancer.

The American Lung Association recommends that the first line of defense against indoor air pollution is finding methods to keep the pollutants from being added to the air in the first place.

Studies prove that pollutants are far greater indoors than outdoors. With indoor pollutants two to five times higher than outdoor pollutants. The air in your home can seriously threaten your family's health.

Pollutants like ethyl acetate, methylene, acetone, chloroform, benzene, trichloroethylene formaldehyde, radon, carbon monoxide, asbestos, lead, and formaldehyde are the main sources of indoor air pollution.

Pollutants can come from an assortment of different sources, pesticides, cleaning products, paint and varnish. Without proper ventilation in the home, these products can build up to dangerous levels

Organic pollutants are produced by living organism, mold, pet dander, mites, dust, pollen, fungi, viruses, bacteria and mildew.

The long term effect of Indoor air pollution is responsible for.

· Respiratory tract infections,

· Coughing, sneezing,

· Heart diseases

· Deadly cancers

· Eye and skin irritations

Learn How to prevent Cancers with House Plants by incorporating the following the tips below.

· Place 4 house plants in each room, more if you want.

· Do not allow anyone to smoke in your home.

· Use wood or tile flooring.

· Properly ventilate bathrooms, kitchen, and basement.

· Install a carbon monoxide detector in your home.

· English Ivy - English ivy plants are evergreen perennials, the vines fasten to the bark of trees, brickwork, and other surfaces by way of many, small root-like structures, which attaches to surfaces

· Spider Plant - Almost everyone knows the Spider plants. They are easy to grow, have very few problems, they do not like treated tap water. Spider plants need to dry out between watering. They have large, plump storage roots that store water, so don't overwater them. A single spider plant can soak up nearly 90 percent of formaldehyde emissions in an average sized room!

· Heart-Leaf Philodendron: requires pruning care to keep its full appearance, this houseplant is toxic when eaten, so please keep out of reach of children and animals.

· Aloe Vera- water this plant once every 2 weeks, leaves works wonders on sunburns, cuts and even bug bites. Moderate to Bright

· Snake Plant- Scientific Name: Sansevieria species this plant is toxic if eaten. NASA has found out that this plant has the amazing ability to absorb formaldehyde, nitrogen oxides, and a variety of other chemicals present in the air. This houseplant is one of the easiest house plants to care for. Water once a week,

A plant filled home feels peaceful, alive and clean.

Tip: Fertilizer should only be given to the plant a few times a year.

Two houseplants can clean about 12 cubic feet of air or about the size of a refrigerator.

Position the plants close to your bed or favorite chair.

The Economic Impact of Cancer

The Economic Impact of Cancer

The Economic Impact of Cancer
By Matthew G Young

Cancer is an expensive illness. Millions of people suffer from it and are treated each year for the disease, but what impact does it really have upon the economy? The answer to this question is actually quite surprising. Cancer is not cheap to treat, but it takes a toll on much more than the healthcare costs, too. Things like worker productivity and the expenses that relatives might have in order to compensate for their family member's illness are also major factor that contribute to the economic impact of cancer.

When someone has cancer, they need to go through a whole lot of tests and treatments. These are expensive and time intensive procedures. The impact of the cost of healthcare is pretty easy to determine, but there are so many other variables that go along with this illness that it is hard to say just what kind of economic impact it has. Europe recently conducted a study to try and estimate the social and financial impact of cancer up the society. If you look at a nation like Germany, the average cost for treating cancer is over 160 Euros per individual residing within the nation. This is the equivalent of about $200 per person per year. This is obviously a huge economic factor and impacts almost everyone within the nation somehow.

Perhaps the hardest part about cancer is that when the disease is advanced, caregivers are often required. This presents a double whammy in many instances. For example, if you have a family member caring for you, that family member's money making ability becomes significantly lower. Caring for a family member is a noble task, but it has a definite economic drain upon families.

This is where getting help can be a big advantage for your family. If you have an elderly loved one with cancer, you should consider having an assisted living facility watch them. People need to work to make a living, and if you are unable to make a living, your entire family will suffer. Assisted living is not free, but in many cases, you will be able to offset the cost of assisted living while you work.

There's no reason to feel that this is giving up or giving in. Assisted living provides an extremely valuable service and it is certainly not a concession upon your behalf. If you want, you can visit your loved one every day while they are in assisted living. For the family to function at its best, this might become a necessary step for you. No one wants to have to put a family member in an assisted living facility, but it can be extremely beneficial, not just from a financial standpoint, but for their own wellbeing, too.

Cancer Overview: Types, Causes, Diagnosis And Treatment

Cancer Overview: Types, Causes, Diagnosis And Treatment

Cancer Overview: Types, Causes, Diagnosis And Treatment
By Otumdi Omekara

Cancer is the name given to a cell that has lost its normal physiological or natural growth control and multiplies very rapidly to produce a large new growth called a tumor or neoplasm (swelling). This new growth or neoplasm could be confined to the local region or directly invade the surrounding tissues. It may also break out with tumor particles carried by blood to distant parts of the body. This is what determines the stage of the tumor.

Such cancers that invade neighboring tissues or spread to distant organs as said to be malignant. Those confined to the original tissue type are said to be benign. The level of disorganization of the tissue architecture also gives a sense of whether the tumor is benign or malignant. Benign cancers are not as dangerous as malignant cancers, although large ones depending on their locations could produce dangerous pressure effects as happens with fibroids causing abortions.

Cancers can arise from virtually any tissue of the body, in the presence of the right stimulus and genetic predisposition. The stimuli that initiate cancer could be radiations (x-ray, solar, etc), chemicals like carbon tetrachloride or asbestos or cigarette smoke, drugs used in early pregnancy, biochemicals like VEGF, etc. The stimuli generally alter the genetic code of the individual cells to disable the tumor suppressor genes that prevent uncontrolled cell growth or ensure programmed cell death (apoptosis)

Different tissues are sensitive to different stimuli, but those cells that naturally grow rapidly are most sensitive to cancer stimuli. Such tissues include the skin, testis, ovaries, breast, uterus, liver, spleen, gastro-intestinal tract, growing bones, blood cell, lungs, lymph nodes etc. The commonest cancers therefore involve the lungs (carcinoma), blood (leukemia), lymphoid tissues (lymphoma), bones (osteoma or steosarcoma), skin (carcinoma), liver (hepatoma), ovaries (cystadenoma or cystadenocarcinoma).

The destructive potential of a particular cancer depends on the type and location. Lung and breast cancers are known to be the two leading causes of death among women in the US. Colon cancer kills a lot of men and women. Leukemia kills a lot children in America by destroying their bone marrows and making them very anemic. Prostate cancer kills a lot men each year in the US. Sun exposure causes a lot of skin cancer in States like Florida. Tumors affecting blood vessels cause them to be fragile and bleed easily. This can be a huge problem in the eyes and brain.

The general approach to treatment of cancers is to detect them early when they are still very local and ablate them surgically, thermally (diathermy) or cryoscopically (freezing). Surgical biopsy is used to obtain some of the cancer tissue for laboratory examination and classification. Early stage cancers are generally cured by surgical excision.

Mid stage cancers, involve both wide surgical dissection, as in breast cancer, and radiation therapy to kill off residual cancer cells. Late stage cancer is mostly treated with chemotherapy and radiation. Leukemias, often involve the wiping out of patients' bone marrow cells and replacing them with donor cells.

Adenoma: What Is Adenoma?

Adenoma: What Is Adenoma?

Adenoma: What Is Adenoma?
By Dr D Smith

What is Adenoma?

Adenoma is benign or non-cancerous tumors that form on glands in the body. They can form on any of the glands in the body like the breasts, lungs, heart and colon. In very rare cases these tumors do turn cancerous or malignant in which case they are called Adenocarcinomas. The glands which cause the growth of these tumors are usually glands which secrete important hormones and fluids in the body. When the epithelial cells responsible for secreting fluids like sweat, saliva and breast milk begin to grow rapidly they form a small lump called adenoma. Even though adenoma is non-cancerous it can cause serious health complications by pressing against other structures or causing over secretion of hormones.

What are the Causes of Adenoma?

There is no particular cause of adenomas. Many medical experts believe genetics have a role to play in the development of adenomas, but it is not the only reason. Certain drugs can increase the risk of adenomas especially in women. Drugs which affect levels of hormones in women, like birth control pills, could lead to the growth of adenomas.

What are the Symptoms?

The most obvious symptom of adenoma is the presence of a lump or a swelling. Depending on the location of the lump the location the size of the lump can be big or small. In case of a growth on internal organs a detailed scan like an MRI might be required.Adenomas in the lungs can go undetected because they produce symptoms similar to that of common cold like coughs, fevers, fatigue and body aches.Other symptoms of adenomas are changes in the body caused due to hormonal imbalances in the body. Hyperthyroidism or Parathyroidism leading to sudden weight loss or weight gains, metabolic changes in the body, kidney stones are all indicative of the presence of adenomas.

What are the Locations of Adenomas?

  • Colon: Adenomas in the colons have a tendency to turn malignant. They are detected by performing a colonoscopy.
  • Renal: Renal adenomas are small in size and are usually derived from renal tubules.
  • Adrenal: Adrenal adenomas are usually located in the abdominal region. Most adrenal adenomas are benign and very rarely run the risk of turning cancerous.
  • Thyroid: Adenomas in the thyroid are most common. However very few of them turn malignant. These can usually be detected by performing a biopsy.
  • Pituitary: Pituitary adenomas go undiagnosed most of the time. They are more common in neurological patients. The increased level of progesterone in the female body suring preganance can lead to pituitary adenomas during this stage
  • Parathyroid: Adenomas in the parathyroid gland can lead to the condition of primary hyperthyroidism
  • Liver: Adenomas of the liver are the rarest and are known as hepatic tumors.
  • Breasts: Breast adenomas are also known as fibroadenomas and often go undetected because they are small in size
  • Appendix: Adenomas of the appendix or cystadenomas are extremely rare and are usually discovered during tissue examination after appendicitis.
  • Bronchial: Bronchial adenomas are responsible for causing the carcinoid syndrome
  • Sebaceous: A sebaceous adenoma is cutaneous in nature and is characterized by a pink, flesh-colored or yellow nodule.
  • Salivary glands: These are also common and often have a tendency to turn cancerous.

What is the Treatment?

Treatment of adenomas depends on the type and location of adenomas. Usually adenomas are treated surgically and monitored by the doctors according to established guidelines. As adenomas in different locations differ in size and growth patterns, their treatment and procedures also vary.
